A year after the R 23 was launched, BMW also made a fantastic start in motor sport. Franz Bieber, Rudi Reich and Rudolf Schleicher were entered as riders for thr Solitude and the won in three classes. A new era of sporting successes began with Ernst Henne.

In 1926, he was German Road Champion in the 500 cc class and in 1927 in the 750 cc class. He won the Targa Florio in Sicily in 1928 and started an unparalleled series of world speed records in 1929. On one day alone - 28 November 1937 - he set 12 new records on the autobahn near Frankfurt. These records include one that stood until 1951.

These successes were inteneded to bear testimony to BMW’s prowess in the press and advertising campaigns.
